Ten years ago, Wendy Chaite embarked on a mission to help foster and fund research on the lymphatic system, and to disseminate information to the scientific and medical community and the public. In an effort to find improved treatments and ultimately a cure, the Lymphatic Research Foundation has been a catalyst to improved understanding of lymphedema and other lymphatic diseases.

“Because of LRF advocacy and programs we have stimulated our national government and the scientific/medical community to pay attention to this critical area of science,” said Chaite, the founder of LRF.

“The lymphatic system has now become a popular field of research, and labs are shifting their resources to focus on this very exciting area of science that is so important to human health,” said Jacqueline Reinhard, executive director of LRF.

How is the LRF committed to raising awareness about the importance of the lymphatic system?

Reinhard: Our mission is to advance research of the lymphatic system both nationally and internationally to find the cause of, and cure for, lymphatic diseases, lymphedema, and related disorders. LRF fosters and supports the research needed to discover the links between lymphatic function, disease and levels of wellness.

Chaite: For example, LRF has helped to establish an endowed chair at Stanford University School of Medicine, the first in the world dedicated to lymphatic research and medicine. The hope is to create a prototype “center of excellence for lymphatic diseases” that will be replicated at other medical schools to improve upon medical education, research and clinical care for these diseases.

How does LRF motivate individuals to study and research this field?

Reinhard: By funding post-doctoral candidates, we encourage young researchers to enter and remain in the field. In addition to supporting research, we’ve launched a pilot program at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research of North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System that is a national registry for patients with lymphatic diseases and lymphedema. This registry, which will eventually be linked with blood/tissue banking, will help gather important information from patients and their health care providers that can be shared with researchers and the industry to advance research and recruit patients for clinical trials.

What advances have been made in lymphatic research?

Chaite: The lymphatic system is now getting the attention of mainstream science and medicine, and breakthrough findings have been published in many leading scientific journals throughout the world. There has been a tremendous surge in research over the past decade, and they are discovering how the lymphatic system is related to cancer metastasis; to auto-immune diseases such as lupus; and even to obesity, asthma and diabetes; to name a few. As we continue to unravel the mysteries, we cannot only help the millions of patients who suffer from lymphatic disease and lymphedema, but any human that is touched by a condition or disease involving the lymphatic system.

How has LRF played a role in the advancement of this field?

Reinhard: We’re the driving force – because of our efforts we’ve reformed the way federal agencies and science addresses lymphatic research

KS:
Typical session ? address problems first if applicable at this point (ex: pain, tight areas, areas that need activating, releasing, etc.)

If time permits, I will do some releasing or the athlete will him or herself (foam rolling, etc.), followed by a really good active warm up. Mobility drills, and large muscle group warm up (lunges, jump rope, push ups, etc..) Active stretches, proprioception work (balance, coordination work)

Teaching and learning come next ? younger athletes need to be taught how to do the lifts, or mechanics correctly, so I will spend some time there at the beginning.
